Geisha Makeover Experience

Only during the Gion Festival season! A photo of a maiko with a special hairstyle getting ready

I'm Sono, an all-mighty staff member at GION AYA, a maiko experience center. Is autumn approaching? The peak of the heat has passed, but... The other day, we delivered photos to A-san, a repeat customer who came to have her photo taken in July as she was preparing for the Gion Festival, so let me introduce them to you. This time, Sono (and sometimes Takazawa) was in charge of everything from makeup and dressing to the photo shoot. This time, A-san came to have her photo taken with a hairstyle called "Katsuyama," which is only worn by older maiko from around July 7th to 7th during the Gion Festival season. The Katsuyama hairstyle is my favorite because the hairpin is gorgeous and it looks beautiful from the side.(Kimono, obi, hairpin, etc. were all brought by Ms. A)   The only half-wig available at GION AYA is the "Ware Shinobu" style that is worn by the younger maiko, so I'm looking forward to seeing the hairstyle that A-san will actually wear on the older maiko. The hairpin is also lovely and summery.   In July, the surrounding shops and inns were decorated for the Gion Festival, with sake charms and lanterns on display, so the main focus of the outdoor location shoot was to capture the atmosphere of the Gion Festival. Ms. A has been photographed in many different locations, and although she brings everything she can prepare herself, we are glad that she said she wanted to ask GION AYA to do the makeup and dressing for the photo shoot.
