The world of Japanese makeup introduced by the Maiko Experience Center GION AYA's Makeup Otaku Garden [White Face Edition]
This is the make-up geek garden at GION AYA, a maiko experience center. Before I started working at GION AYA, I was a beauty consultant, but when I first came into contact with Japanese make-up tools, I was very confused because they were different from normal make-up tools. First of all, as it is called "water make-up," both the white make-up used as foundation and the rouge are dissolved in water before use. I remember having a lot of trouble with how to use them.
I was only taught how to do Japanese makeup once (mainly how to use the tools). After that, I arrived at my current method through trial and error, with the desire to "give customers beautiful Japanese makeup." In this article, I will talk about the world of Japanese makeup while introducing the items used to put on makeup for maiko at GION AYA.
As I was writing this, it became really long, so this time"White Paint Edition"These are the white makeup items that will become the base of Japanese makeup.
At GION AYA, we often use products from Mitsuyoshi, a manufacturer that handles stage makeup tools. We use white powder (a foundation-like item in white makeup) depending on the texture and color development.3 typeThis is a preference of the makeup staff, and since there are differences in the whiteness of the skin, the texture when applied, and the transparency depending on the manufacturer, we use our own mix to get the best of each manufacturer.
The flat one next to it with green letters is used as a base for white makeup.Hair oilIt is a very important item for finishing shironuri beautifully. Not only does it allow the almost oil-free shironuri to adhere to the skin, but it also prevents sweat from escaping from the areas where it is applied, even during times when you sweat easily. The amount of this oil and how you apply it can make a difference in the finish. The lesson I always teach after 17 years of shironuri experience is that"Appropriate amount"The worst thing is to eat too much.
If you use too much hair oil, the powder will tend to wrinkle and adhere too much to the hair, resulting in a thick, dry finish.
It takes a long time to get the "right amount" right. Next, you dissolve the white powder in water before use, but it's not enough to just dissolve it in water and use it; you need to dissolve it thoroughly and use the right amount of water to suit your skin condition. The amount of water varies depending on the staff, with some preferring more water and others preferring a thicker consistency. When applying with a brush, the finish changes depending on how you apply it, so each staff member has their own preferences.
In the video, the process of applying moisture with a puff looks simple, but it's actually quite difficult.
Using the puff to absorb moisture while blending it finely is the key point, as at first you may not even be able to hold the puff properly and you'll be like, "What is this?" The important points when using the puff are speed and blending it finely without absorbing too much moisture, and... Even when it comes to white makeup, there are many different preferences, and each staff member has their own ideal finish. Sono's ideal has always been "white makeup that is transparent and glossy" ↓ Sono and Takazawa talk casually about white makeup in this YouTube video (lol)
When the shironuri is done well, the color will come out well and you will look even more beautiful. Shironuri is really quite complex. I'm a little biased, but I think the shironuri skills of the GION AYA staff, who welcome customers from all over the world with all kinds of skin types, must be at a very high level. I'm sure there are many people who are hesitant to bleach their face, but shironuri is an experience that you would never normally have, so I think it's something everyone should definitely try. I've written a lot, but... I've talked about the most important point in the beauty of Japanese makeup, "shironuri," and I'll introduce other items in my next blog.
